A Squeeze of Ecstasy

Across the street from Chili Pepper, hidden among the medical offices of the United Plaza, is a little gem called Squeezed. Owned by locals Tavo Godoy and Jesse Demara, Squeezed is a Mexican snack shop that provides real competition to Mr. Mango and Raspados Pinguino. However, comparing Squeezed to its competitors would be unfair because Squeezed hits a home run in all aspects.

First off, the menu at Squeezed stands out as unique because of it is beautifully handwritten with pastel chalk on a blackboard wall. It is colorful and well organized; providing a helpful list of ingredients next to each menu item. The variety of Squeeze’s menu is unlike its competitors, which target more of a niche Mexican culture audience, because it offers items that can appeal to anyone. They have sandwiches, smoothies, drinks, snacks, and fruit but also serve healthy drinks as well.

Walk into Squeezed and right away you notice the bright colors and hip music. The walls are a lively combination of orange and green and the furniture colored with a palette of black, white, orange, and green. The couches, tables, and stools all bring a sort of modern look and vibe to the room. The shop is kept nice and tidy with no room for dust bunnies. The music is picked with good taste but a bit too loud if your focus is a book, but otherwise a nice addition to a delicious snack. Altogether a pleasant ambience and vibe fill the room for the couples, families, and students you are like to see around the room.

According to employee Carlos, "… the green squeeze smoothie is a customer favorite along with the Churros locos" and we’d have to agree that those were two of our favorites.

Right from the start the Churros Locos are very appealing. They are served piled high in a clear cup. Just like you order them anywhere else, they contain churros, cucumber, Japanese peanuts, tamarind candy, tajin, chamoy, tomato juice, and lemon juice. After the first bite, it's almost impossible to not fall in love with the savory taste and crunch of the churros. More tamarind candy is added than usual so the tangy sweet and sour taste lingers in your mouth after every bite. The tomato juice is at a perfect cool temp making the snack nice and chilly to go along with the semi spicy flavors of the drink. When visiting Squeezed you have to try the fan favorite delicious churros locos and you'll fall in love like the rest of the customers!

You’ll also fall in love with the Green Squeeze. Radiating in its clear cup, this healthy concoction resembles a Wendy’s frosty after a food coloring accident. But don’t let the color discourage you, its fruity goodness is magical and guiltless! Like the other smoothies on the menu, the Green Squeeze is bottled by Dr. Smoothie Brands in Fullerton, CA who boasts a product with 100% crushed fruit with seeds, peelings and no added sugar. However, for the fruit purists among us, Squeezed does offer to make their smoothies from 100% real blended fruit which is my personal recommendation.

Another favorite was the 918 and it was very delicious. It had very great taste. It was a mixture of crushed Tostitos, cucumbers, pineapple, chamoys, and Mexican candy. It tasted authentic from all the other places I’ve have been. The fruit was very fresh, and sweet. The fresh food was my favorite thing.

The service at Squeezed was welcoming and attentive. The staff greeted us as we entered the door and the whole experience is similar to visiting a colorful Starbucks. The wait times are similar to Starbucks as well - about 4-8 minutes to get your order which was a welcome surprise because many of the complaints from users online were about slow service. Our team even visited during a variety of business hours across the week and the service remained consistent.

In all, you’ll probably treat Squeezed like Rosa does. As a medical assistant she stops by,” … maybe once a week usually during my break time or after the gym." And that’s how we recommend Squeezed, as a quick-stop snack and smoothie shop.
